Why Use ICSI for Horse Breeding?
ICSI Embryo Process
A veterinarian collects unfertilized oocytes (eggs) from a donor mare’s ovaries using an ultrasound-guided aspiration technique.
The mare does not need to be in heat or ovulate naturally.
Once we receive the collected oocytes and the stallion’s sperm, we perform the ICSI technique in our laboratory.
This involves injecting a single sperm cell directly into each oocyte using a microscopic needle.
ICSI allows for fertilization even with a very limited sperm supply, making it ideal for rare or deceased stallions.
After sperm injection, we monitor the development of the fertilized oocytes until they reach the blastocyst stage.
Only viable blastocysts are selected for further processing.
The resulting blastocysts are cryopreserved (frozen) for later use.
Once frozen, they can be safely shipped back to your veterinarian for embryo transfer into a recipient mare at the optimal time.
